Mission and scope

The Marketing Working Group has responsibility for OpenAjax Alliance's communication, educational, and promotional activities. These activities help the Alliance to fulfill its mission of accelerating successful adoption of open and interoperable Ajax-based web technologies, and enable the Alliance to drive the future of the Ajax ecosystem.

This WG produces the Alliance’s architecture vision documents, which help the IT manager and developer understand the Ajax landscape and the various Ajax technology alternatives (e.g., client-side Ajax toolkits vs. server-side Ajax toolkits). In cooperation with other Working Groups, it publishes the criteria that determine whether a product or technology is OpenAjax Conformant. A key target for the Alliance's educational and communications materials is the mainstream IT professional, in contrast to early adopters.

This WG oversees the following materials:

  • OpenAjax's architecture vision
  • OpenAjax's overall marketing strategy
  • Web site (www.openajax.org)
  • Branding issues such as logos, slide show templates, and brand strategy
  • Communications materials such as white papers, slide shows, FAQs, and block diagrams
  • Media relations such as magazine articles
  • Conformance strategies and guidelines
  • Industry-standard vocabularies for Ajax and OpenAjax

Because this Working Group is marketing-focused, the Working Group will not produce detailed technical material such as technology Specifications. The Working Group, however, will produce documents such as white papers that discuss technology from a high level architectural perspective. It might produce sample applications that demonstrate OpenAjax technologies and illustrate various approaches to achieving OpenAjax conformance in practice, while the relevant technical Specifications for these technologies are defined by other Working Groups.

Work plan

Deliverables

This WG does not have a discrete list of deliverables. Instead, it is chartered to produce whatever materials that are consistent with the WG's mission and scope. Nevertheless, it is expected that the WG will produce:

  • Updates as appropriate to the set of White Papers delivered by OpenAjax Alliance. These updates are likely to expand on the original Technical Overview White Paper produced in 2006, both in breadth and depth, and will likely result in the release of a set of White Papers where each addresses different topics. One White Paper will probably address the "Why Ajax" (or "What Does Ajax Make Business Sense?") question. Other White Papers will focus on the "What Is Ajax" question, Ajax architectural approaches, Ajax security, and possibly Mobile Ajax.
  • Materials that promote "OpenAjax Conformance," including strategy development, documentation, implementation, communications, and evangelism
  • Official logos
  • FAQs
  • Enhancements of the Web site, such as links to other Ajax sites and resources
  • An Ajax glossary of terms
  • Determination of whether there are any next steps beyond white papers that can help the IT professional navigate through the "tyranny of choice" that IT professionals face today given hundreds of Ajax products and dozens of open source projects. One option to consider is a product selector web application that uses the taxonomies defined in the white papers.
  • Contributions to blogging areas and forums

There are no known intellectual property issues that will result from the Work Plan.

Schedule

Duration

This WG will be chartered to run until Dec. 31, 2008.

Revisions to this charter might shorten or extend the duration of this WG.

Milestones

The following milestones represent expected delivery dates, but the WG can update delivery dates at its own discretion.

  • It is expected that a revised set of White Papers will be completed in the first half of 2007.
  • It is expected that there will be minor updates to the Web site every month or two, including updates to existing information and addition of new pages.
  • It is expected that the first major release of material around OpenAjax Conformance will be completed by mid 2007.

Success and completion criteria

This WG can consider itself successful if the OpenAjax Web site is a preferred choice of both industry leaders and IT professionals for information on how to be successful with open and interoperable Ajax.

Relationship to other forums

  • Any mobile communications efforts should take into account coordination with the W3C's Mobile Web Initiative (MWI).

Chair, expected membership, and operational rules

Jon Ferraiolo is the chair for this WG. It is expected that the people who are currently involved in the existing Marketing Committee will participate in this WG. There will be a consensus decision process managed by the chair that aligns with common practice in Web standards (e.g., W3C consensus process) and open source activities (e.g., Apache voting process), where a particular decision process used to resolve a particular issue is chosen by the chair based on appropriateness to the given circumstance. This WG produces recommendations to the Membership and Steering Committee about activities and material to be published, in accordance with process defined by the OpenAjax Alliance Members Agreement and OpenAjax Alliance Development Process.
