- AJAXWorld - Second InteropFest?
- PROPOSAL: InteropFest 1.0 (to coincide with OpenAjax Hub 1.0 and OpenAjax Conformance 1.0)
- PROPOSAL: One test case as follows
- Requires at least two "Ajax toolkits" on same Web page (one of two can be a trivial toolkit that we supply with the test)
- Success results are displayed within a fragment of HTML (versus previous test, which was a whole Web page)
- Test case verifies that a library has registered itself and is using the pub/sub engine. (Continuous update of number of events published.)
- Demos (same strategy with Ajax Experience, Rich Web Experience, and other conferences)
- PROPOSAL: Jon demonstrates toolkits that support latest OpenAjax Hub
- Motivates member companies to get going with integrating the Hub into their products
- PROPOSAL: Jon demonstrates toolkits that support latest OpenAjax Hub
- OpenAjax track?
- AJAXWorld magazine articles
- "Ajax and OpenAjax - Coming of Age" or something like that?
- Standard OpenAjax demos
- Not much to report as yet. Still researching.
- TIBCO has shared its demos and Jackbe is trying to see how they can help.
- Please tell Jon if you have demos or demo ideas that he can use
- Should OpenAjax Alliance publish material about Mobile Ajax
- Contribution coming soon from FutureText/Ajit Joakar (hopefully a future member):

Minutes
Topic: AJAXWorld
Jon: I submitted proposed abstracts for a one-day track on OpenAjax at AJAXWorld in September. Best idea anyone had was to organize things functionally. I would recruit leading people from each committee to give the talk. OK for companies to mention that by the way we have products in this particular area. This motivates companies to give talks so that they can also give an ad for their products.
Ted: Looks like a good set of talks.
Topic: Google talks at AJAXWorld
Jon: Chris is looking for suggestions about what sorts of talks he might give at AJAXWorld that showcase Google's use of Ajax.
Chris: And also OpenAjax.
Ted: At OpenLink, we have been looking at iGoogle and the limited flexibility it has. We are still trying to get our heads around this. We are thinking there might be better ways than just defining data source specifications and shackeling to integrate data sources. Can't articulate it well because it is still early.
Jon: Do you think the limitations stem from security concerns?
Ted: Maybe that's the reason or maybe that's a partial reason, but the lack of flexibility was just the easy way out and there are better approaches.
Jon: We are working on some approaches in the security activity that might help the industry achieve secure mashups with flexibility. I also can't articulate well because it is also still early.
Jon: But back to Chris's question. Any other suggestions?
(none)
Jon: Chris and I will be meeting privately soon and we can talk further.
Topic: InteropFest
Jon: I am thinking that we should do a second InteropFest that finished in September around the time of AJAXWorld and our face-to-face meeting. This time however we would have a standard fragment of HTML, such as a DIV, that says "Test succeeded" rather than a whole web page. Each toolkit would provide a wrapper HTML doc and insert our DIV inside. Only verifies two features: toolkit registered with Hub and participation in pub/sub engine.
Ted: I suggest two levels. First level is simply integrating with Hub like we had in March. Second level requires communication with a different toolkit.
Jon: Yes, that's very good. Two levels. First level is easy, so many toolkits can get the badge of approval without great time investment. Second level take more work.
Ted: OpenLink did integrate with another toolkit in March.
Jon: Actually, we had 4-5 demos in March of multiple toolkits on same page. But TIBCO might have had a couple of them by themselves.
Ted: Two levels shows evolution and growth of Alliance. First InteropFest was mainly about just integrating with Hub. Second one adds integrating with another toolkit using the Hub.
Jon: Yes.
Jon: Also, we have 2 1/2 months before end of Sept. I am hoping to find time to integrate with non-member toolkits. We could add these contributions to the list of successful integrations, but as a separate category so that the people behind these toolkits don't think we are overstepping. My first thought was calling this something like "Contributed Integrations". Tests that pass, but which were done by people outside of the toolkits that were used.
Ted: Sure.
Topic: Jon showcasing specific toolkits in his talks on OpenAjax
Jon: I am proposing that over the next few months I will give time to demo products that support the Hub. This free advertising would be an extra incentive to be an early adopter. Sound OK?
Ted: Yes. But should give top priority to companies that supported the Hub in March.
Jon: (a what have you done for me lately argument) But we gave publicity in March for the InteropFest in March. People need to integrate with the latest Hub to get publicized this round.
Ted: Of course.
Jon: I see. You are saying that the companies that are current today and jumped on early should get priority. Yeah, OK, we'll see.
Topic: Theme for AJAXWorld conference and magazine - coming of age
Jon: Used to be the promise of Ajax. Lots of stuff is mature and shipping and lots of interesting new technology initiatives like Google Gears. OpenAjax also coming of age. What do people think?
Ted: Sounds good.
Topic: Mobile Ajax and the iPhone
Jon: I am wondering what role OpenAjax should play in helping the community be successful with Ajax on mobile devices. We could just sit and watch or we could play a more active role, such as saying we like what Apple is doing and promoting.
Ted: They are mainly just implementing standards, which we support. One possible role has to do with saving data.
Jon: I like the idea that truth is on the server and any local data is just a cache of the server data.
Ted: For salesmen, sometimes the truth is what's on their local device.
Jon: The adjustment to what I have said is to model this scenario like mail. You do local work, which is queued locally, but when you can sync, then it is uploaded to server. So, cache and queue model. But after sync, the salesman can go to an Internet cafe and work from there and doesn't lose data if device dies.
Jon: I am thinking maybe OpenAjax should launch a local storage activity. For CommHub, we are working on standard APIs that we don't implement but instead a toolkit provides the implementation of those APIs. Maybe a similar approach for local storage. But this isn't going to happen immediately. We've got lots on our plate for now.
Topic: Rest of agenda
Ted: I don't have any comments on the topics on the rest of the agenda.
Topic: Next meeting
Jon: In two weeks.
