OpenAjax Alliance Steering Committee meeting minutes 2007-02-22
Attendees
- IBM/David Boloker
- NEXAWEB/Coach Wei
- TIBCO/Kevin Hakman
- ZEND/Michael Pinette
- ZIMBRA/Scott Dietzen
- Jon Ferraiolo
Original Agenda
- Agenda
- Google request for defining a process around possible future budgets and fees
- Proposal: Yes, we will do this
- Here is how it might work (i.e., proposed process to establish/modify OpenAjax budget&fees)
- SC writes a budget&fees proposal
- Proposal must allow 1 month between SC approval and when fees begin
- Membership gets minimum 1 month to review
- Then an all-member proposal review phone call
- Then members get to vote (this vote is non-binding, but strongly worded guidelines tell the SC to take all negative comments seriously)
- Then SC votes (this vote in binding)
- If SC approves, all members must be notified about the new budget/fee plan, along with instructions for how they might terminate involvement in OpenAjax Alliance if they so choose
- Would be good to discuss this at the F2F
- Approve new members
- Custom Credit Systems: http://www.customcreditsystems.com/
- CCS develops powerful automation tools that give financial institutions the ability to generate professional documentation based on their legal language. Their systems combine some of the most sophisticated word processing features with the ability to dynamically store and retrieve data. Storing data in relational databases allows the data to be used for other processes, such as loan booking or credit monitoring.
- Presented at AJAXWorld in October on Ajax programming challenges
- Custom Credit Systems: http://www.customcreditsystems.com/
- F2F meeting - March 22-23
- Decision needed immediately: 2 days, 1.5 days, or 1 day? (Perhaps Thursday for everyone, Friday morning for Marketing)
- Final agenda still in process

- Mobile Ajax
- Jon's trip report from 3GSM World Congress, including the Mobile Ajax Summit (organized and hosted by Vodafone)
- Recommendation from summit: Joint W3C/MWI and OpenAjax Workshop on Mobile Ajax in June 2007
- Assuming this OK, should it be in London or Silicon Valley (or elsewhere)?
- Status report (on the agenda for every SC meeting)
- Marketing committee
- Interoperability committee
- Task forces
- IDE/Server task forces
- Communications Hub
- Security
- Google request for defining a process around possible future budgets and fees
Minutes
Topic: Google request for defining a process around possible future budgets and fees
Jon: Already six +1 votes via email. Any other comments or discussion?
(none)
Jon: OK, I'll tell Google the Steering Committee agrees to define a process for establishing budgets and fees.
Topic: Approve Custom Credit Systems
(Jon gives a quick background on the company and how they clearly are using Ajax since they talk about their experiences at conferences.)
(five votes +1 to accept them as members)
Topic: F2F meeting - March 22-23
(Jon points to current agenda. Asks if anyone sees missing topics or things that should be changed, but no suggested changes to agenda from SC members.)
Jon: Key decision for today - should we say it is a 2-day meeting, 1.5 day meeting or 1 day meeting, and then should there be another half-day for marketing breakout.
David: If only Thursday, it might be a very long Thursday.
MikeP: It's a full agenda. Mainly informative or are we looking for particular results?
David: Looking to establish InteropWG and MarketingWG. Want to discuss 3GSM and mobile and determine what our actions should be. Action on security also - how to scope, build charter and move into a WG. We are asking IEEE folks to come to help educate us and help us plan.
Jon: Other outcomes. Decision on how to finish Hub 1.0 and tell industry it's done, now go crazy. For IDE and Server task forces, would like decision on future direction. My current thinking is to form an Integration WG (parallel with Interoperability WG) that pursues an OpenAjax Components spec (parallel with OpenAjax Hub spec), where new spec talks about standards for integrating Ajax widgets into IDEs and server frameworks. Also, like to decide on action plan for Communications Hub. My thinking there is that we see if there is agreement to do Communications Hub in Interop WG as a key feature in Hub 1.1.
(Multiple): Makes sense.
Mike: OK. Agenda is very packed.
David: I would be surprised if security by itself was less than 2 hours.
Coach: My guess is that the agenda will take 1.5 days. Ideal if marketing breakout happened after that.
Kevin: Security would be good to give more than 2 hours.
David: 2-3 hours.
Scott: Both educate and discuss actions?
David: Yes. Security isn't really an Ajax issue. It's a Web issue. What can be done with existing situation vs changing things which is probably 5 years and probably most of changes would be done at W3C.
David: Next biggest topic is probably IDE.
Kevin: Related to this - how to create and foster a market for 3rd party Ajax components. IDE effort is a step in that direction.
Jon: Agreed.
David: So, let's say 1.5 days. Afternoon is marketing breakout. Everyone agree?
(agreement)
MikeP: Is conformance all marketing?
David: The conformance topics on the marketing agenda are all marketing topics.
Topic: Mobile Ajax Workshop sponsored jointly with W3C/MWI and OpenAjax
(Jon talks about 3GSM conference. Mobile computing as an irresistible force backed by giants such as Google, Youtube, Myspace, eBay, entertainment giants, and many others, but an immovable object due to major obstacles such as poor networks, device costs, pricing models, and a few other big things.)
(someone): How strong was Java?
Jon: The conference was focused on mobile networks mostly. Not much discussion of presentation technologies. However, asking around, J2ME is used for large number of mobile applications today, but this requires a programmer. It's clear that only big guys will want to do Java. Smaller guys will want to make minor changes to existing desktop HTML/Ajax.
(Jon talks about Mobile Ajax Summit hosted by Vodafone. About 15 companies met for 3 hours to compare notes and discuss possible actions. Agreement to have a joint W3C/OpenAjax workshop on Mobile Ajax with position papers. Probably in June. Probably 40-80 attendees and 20-40 papers submitted.)
Jon: W3C prefers London. I strongly recommend Silicon Valley. I think the most important attendees are the Ajax community, and a large percentage is Silicon Valley. The W3C guys are all over, but most of the mobile browser activities are in US even if headquarters are elsewhere. If we require a plane flight, most of the Ajax leaders won't attend, but they would drive 15 minutes down the freeway.
Jon: First, does everyone agree that it's OK for me to say OpenAjax wants to co-sponsor? For sure, it won't be the only thing we do, so it is just one thing among many. And we won't wait for the workshop to get started.
(everyone): yes on the workshop
Jon: So, where?
David: Let's get a reading from people on the phone. Would you go to London?
MikeP: Unlikely to go to London.
Coach: We are in Boston. Doesn't matter to us.
Kevin: We would be interested in the outcomes. Not a prime contributor. Probably wouldn't go to London, probably would go if in Silicon Valley.
Scott: Same boat. We feel like the mobile platform isn't ready to do the Ajax that we need in our products. But we are probably an outlier. Would go to workshop if in Bay Area but probably not London. Better if local.
Jon: OK, I'll send a strong recommendation to have it in Silicon Valley.
