Minutes
Topic: Election
Jon: 3 slots are open. Coach's, MikeP's, and Kevin's. We talked about process at the March face-to-face meeting and people said it was OK to do things like last time but improve where it makes sense and generally people said Jon do what makes sense. I suggest that the election happen exactly one year after last year's election, which means the first week of October. That allows discussion at the face-to-face meeting about the election so people are well-informed. One thing different that I have done is write a Web application for casting votes instead of last year's method of sending an email. It's an Ajax application. Will make it an OpenAjax application before making it available. Also, I'll create a small Web application for nominating yourself. Very simple. Identify your company, identify yourself, and some sort of area for free-form text.
MikeP: When are nominations open?
Jon: I haven't figured that out yet. I think last year we did it a 2-3 weeks before. I was going to do like last year. Probably sometime around 2nd week of September.
Topic: Face-to-face
Jon: I have sketched out some topics for the meeting, so far mainly just reports from the committees.
MikeM: Have you thought about other topics?
Jon: Yes. I propose that we review our new Development Process and the issue of Active Standing and notify people at the face-to-face that we intend to start implementing the Active Standing aspect to our Working Groups after the face-to-face. We'll also talk about OpenAjax Hub 1.1, what we are thinking, what has happened so far, and the approach we will be taking.
DavidB: We should have made some good progress on Hub 1.1 by the time of the meeting.
Jon: Also, just like March, we will have a session on the InteropFest where people get to show off what they have done. Also, review what's been happening with the Registry.
DavidB: Also want to mention what happens on the day after.
Jon: Yes, the Mobile Ajax Workshop happens the day after.
Topic: InteropFest
Jon: I have a sample application that uses the Hub with Prototype, Scriptaculous and Yahoo. I thought it was important to show examples with leading toolkits from non-members. We are expecting that our members will participate in the InteropFest and get their own toolkits working, just like the last InteropFest. In fact, won't take much to upgrade the old tests to work in the new InteropFest. But which other non-member toolkits do we need to get working with the InteropFest?
(discussion - people mention JQuery and EXT - agreement that we should have a demo that uses GWT - Jon promises to send a reminder to Joe Walker about DWR - Jon reminds Kevin about finishing the sample application they did a few weeks ago)
Topic: AJAXWorld conference
(Jon says that right now despite earlier agreement the schedule shows the OpenAjax talk as being within a track session rather than a general session. However, it is the very first track session so at least the session has some prominence)
Topic: AJAXWorld magazine
(Jon reports that 3 articles have been shipped off. Lots of work behind these 3 articles, particularly the one on security. Security TF and Marketing WG collaborated on a longer articles for weeks on both technical content and wordsmithing. Then it was condensed for AJAXWorld. Then 3 editorial passes from marketing and writing teams from SAP, ILOG and IBM.)
Topic: Security white paper
(Jon reports that it appears to be all done and simply needs approval to publish and then we have our 5th white paper.)
Topic: Offline
Jon: I got contacted by Google to see if we might be interested in putting offline support into Hub 1.1.
Kevin: Good opportunity for Hub 1.1 timeline. Existing work in industry around offline is well underway with Google Gears and AIR. Sounds like a good parallel and coordinated task and check relationship with Hub 1.1 timeline
Coach: But we need to check to see if Google Gears really wants to contribute. If yes, then we should start a task force.
Jon: Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.
Kevin: Yes, good idea.
Topic: IDE Working Group
Kevin: Finished the requirements document this morning. Now will start work on implementing and writing the spec in parallel. We are working on a survey of existing work for easy comparison. Jon will set up a grid. MS, Aptana, Adobe and Sun/jMaki have existing formats.
Jon: I will have the grid by tomorrow.
Kevin: Adobe has become active in the past few weeks. The Dreamweaver group.
Jon: I want to point out that we are fortunate to have all of the big players working together. MS, Adobe, Eclipse with ATF, Aptana, and Wayne, and Microsoft.
Scott: Have you approached Intelli-J?
MikeP: They have done nice work on JavaScript authoring.
Kevin: No, haven't approached them
MikeM: I have email addresses
Jon: Send to Kevin and me
MikeM: Aptana and ATF both use Eclipse. Are the collaborating on metadata formats?
Jon: Yes, in fact that's what's going on in the IDE WG. Everyone collaborating on a metadata format that everyone will support.
MikeM: Are we talking with ActiveState about our IDE work?
Kevin/Jon: They are members but aren't on IDE committee
MikeM: I'll send email on them, also.
Topic: Mobile
Jon: One meeting, but off and running. White paper outline and lots of research and discussion about mobile device APIs for JavaScript.
Scott: Security issues
Jon: On my radar, at least.
Topic: Security task force
Jon: As I said before, white paper is done. Next big thing is a wiki page that serves as a table of contents or bibliography to detailed Web information on Ajax security issues.
David: This is consistent with our goal to be a central point of information for Ajax developers. Idea is to bring detail to the white paper which is more of an executive summary.
Topic: Hub 1.0
Kevin: Where are we regarding getting approval on Hub 1.0
Jon: There are various dependencies that need to be done before asking membership to approve. InteropFest is one and that is moving along. But one outstanding issue is that we need Dojo to integrate the Hub natively to verify that everything is OK in that part of the Hub. That work will happen in the next couple of weeks.
