Tools development updates
NH: Latest AInspector Sidebar release is 0.15.5
NH: Changed rule category name from "Styles/Readability" to "Styles/Content"
NH: Deleted user preference "Allow table markup for page layout"
Review landmark rules
JG: Each page must have at least one main landmark that identifies the main content.
JG: Landmark Rule 1: No more than one main landmark that identifies the main content.
JG: This rule is doing two separate things
NH: Summary: Page must have MAIN landmark
AA: Having a manual check for every page to check that MAIN landmark identifies the main content is cumbersome
NH: Page must have meaningful sequence: seems inappropriate in Tables category
MJ: Layout table content must have meaningful sequence
NH: Can we get rid of manual checks for headings and link text being descriptive?
AA: Technique suggestion: HTML layout tables may not always linearize correctly and therefore it is usually better to use CSS to position information on a Web page.
AA: Some assistive technology must linearize tables in order to present them to the user. This means that the user will hear the table cell by cell, from left to right and top to bottom.
NH: The above applies when the AT does not identify a table as a data table.
NH: http://www.relegant.com/current-events/ (example of page with layout table)
JG: Lets revisit the question of rules with manual checks for meaningful content
JG: Do we need the rules for link text, headings being descriptive?
NH: Labels must be descriptive, another example of pervasive manual check
JG: Maybe we have a configuration pref: don't report element-level manual checks?
JG: For next week I will try to have a list of all element-level manual check rules that are nearly always triggered and that are checking for descriptive content or meaningfulness, to discuss whether each rule is needed.
